About Matthew Lubin
I am a writer, editor, proofreader, social media consultant, English composition teacher and tutor from New Jersey. I am always interested in other opportunities, especially in the publishing industry.
I spent three and a half years working in Shenzhen, China, and another two and half years in Taipei, Taiwan. I write on a variety of subjects in different forms (fiction, reviews, non-fiction, poetry, screenplay). I have worked as a financial editor for Yuanta, a copy editor for BrightWire, and assistant editor for The New Jersey Law Journal. My past and present clients include a vodka company, a law and business book publisher, and a Japan-based PR firm. I was professor of academic writing in English at Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Graduate School in southern China. In December 2008, I created the China-centric literary journal Terracotta Typewriter, which is no longer available. Since it was created, I published nine issues.
My work has appeared in Taiwan News, Scoot in-flight magazine, Asia's Best Hotels and Resorts (3rd ed.), Shenzhen Daily, TravelSort, Unshod Quills, American Drivel Review, The Aroostook Review, Ink Collective, and American Poets Abroad. I maintained a blog of my China experience and other musings at The Waiguoren Critic of South China, which has had posts picked up by Global Voices. My current adventures are now posted at Booze, Food, Travel. I also created a news and information site called Total Taipei, for which I summarize Chinese-language news in English.
My philosophy when it comes to travel is to take the middle road--don't travel cheap, don't take luxury tours, don't plan too much. The experience of travel always involves culture and food, usually at the same time. It's rare that I find food that I don't enjoy -- every country has something special for the culinary enthusiast.
I've traveled to Panama, Mexico, England, Ireland, The Netherlands, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Israel, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia (Bali and Yogyakarta). In China I've been to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau, Zhaoqing, Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Tianjin, Urumqi, Shihezi, Chengdu, Huanglong/Jiuzhaigou, Songpan, Leshan, Shuyang, Xiamen, Zhouzhuang, Guilin, and Yangshuo.
Contact me if you would be interested in hiring me for editing and/or writing work. I am available for freelance work or if you need any Asian travel stories or travel advice.
